continued.....
Tobler and I returned home.
I was tired, too tired.
I skipped dinner, no appetite.
The loss of my 'suitcase-hand bag' still bothered me.
Tobler and I sat on the balcony for some fresh air.
My thumb throbbed.
I looked at it.
It looked swollen.
Naturally, I said to myself, the kiss was far from polite.
I decided not to over react.
11.30 pm.
My thumb throbbed.
My head throbbed too.
Perhaps due to Tobler's continuous barking, for the snake he tried to shoo.
The swelling had progressed.
Has the swelling really progressed or am I just getting stressed?
I decided not to make much of it.
I decided not to look at it.
Too much had happened in the last couple of days to be able to think straight.
First thing tomorrow morning I will go to a 'Vaid' (quack), I promised.
I switched off the lights.
Tried to sleep.
Tossed and turned.
Forced myself to sleep.
By now the pain I couldn't deny
the throbbing was on a high.
2.00 am
Weird burning and throbbing.
I switched on the lights.
Oops, the swelling had travelled, from thumb to hand, not a pleasant sight.
May be I 'should' go to a doctor and seek his advise, at least it'll be better than mine.
As I got into my matiz, the watchman came running,
to check if Madame was alive or dead.
"M...M...M....Medumji"he stuttered in dread
'Hum doctor ke pass jaa rahey hai', I said.
He shook his head north south east west, in approval, I guess.
I drove to a small private hospital close to my house in Thane.
It was silent, sleepy and deserted at this hour.
In the emergency wing
the doctor on duty had a look at my hand and the swelling.
Me : Does it look like a venomous bite?
Doc : hmmm... not sure.
Me : Can I check-in here for the night?
Doc : No point, if it is a venomous bite, we don't have any anti-venin supply.
The only place you will get anti-venin, is KEM, for sure.
Me : Er....Can I take the ambulance?
Doc : Sure. Rs.1000/-
but for you, it will be 2000/- (to & fro).
You can go to the reception, complete the payment formalities.
Me : Oh !
(How sweet of him to double my trip when I could not pay for even a needle prick!)
I had absolutely no money.
(Money, I was to widraw from the ATM, tomorrow morning. )
I had no ID.
I had no cell phone either.
I requested for a pain killer to ease the relentless throbbing.
Doc : Rs.200/-
Me : May I please pay you tomorrow as I have forgotten my purse?
Doc : OK.
Hah! It was too incredible to convince him of the sequence of events that presently made me pennyless , ID less and husbandless.
The scene was getting coincidental, melodramatic and filmy, very Bollywood-Tollywood style.
I recalled a melodramatic scene from a hindi film.
Jumping Jack Jeetender - in full white, the sorrow laden hero, inundated with sorrows of the world. Personally, emotionally, professionally and spiritually he was getting badgered.
Personally - by his maa- Nirupa Roy, the ever tearful
Emotionally - by his girlfriend ( the heroine), the prettiest and most graceful
Professionally - by his boss, most ungrateful
Spiritually - by his fate of events, most unsuccessful.
He was having the worst coincidental luck. Nothing was going right for him.
He stumbled, tripped and struggled at every door step, staining his favourite clothes so white thru his un-natural plight.
The violin in the background music played on pitifully.
My story of coincidences, was nowhere close to Jeetu's. His involved the universe.
After the voveron injection,
I expected the jabbing pain to recede, but no relief.
Finally, I decided to call upon the most trusted..... my parents, to be by my side.
I was already feeling stupid inside (calm and stupid, an uncommon condition that probably kept me alive), for them it'd be a long ride, mid night.
When I called them, I rattled off my instructions, like a rattle snake shaking his rattle tail.....
"Please don't ask questions at this point of time.
I have been told that the only hospital where I can be treated for a snake bite is KEM.
But I don't know the way to KEM hospital.
Let's not waste time, it's best you meet me mid way at Dadar TT circle,
and please carry some money.
to be continued.....
