The Unwise Owl

Barn Owls nest and roost in tree cavities as well as in many kinds of human structures, barns, churches, houses, buildings.
Rural as well as urban population in India consider barn owls an ill omen, and hence they are killed
or displaced from their nesting sites, irrespective of their good work (amazing rodent control) or their little owlets being orphaned.

An Ode to this Beautiful Bird.

THE UNWISE OWL

White as snow
is her heart shaped face
and a golden brown gown she adorns
mottled with grey
Her acute sense of sight and sound
readies her for her prey
In silent flight she stretches her broad wings
for a marvellous display

Swoops down
to pick her food
with talons that will never fail
So perfect her aim
her beauty
her grace

Her only mistake
she makes her home in human encroached space

Considered ill omen by the selfish human race
man unkind will have her killed
and her owlets
displaced

How I wish the barn owl would select my place to stay!
