At this time of the year one can spot the Grey Hornbills in Delhi as they ready for their mating season.
....The nesting season is April to June and the clutch varies from one to five very symmetrical white eggs. Indian Grey Hornbills usually nest in tree hollows on tall trees. An existing hollow may be excavated further to suit. The female enters the nest hollow and seals the nest hole and leaves only a small vertical slit that the male uses to feed her. The nest entrance is sealed by the female using its excreta and mud-pellets supplied by the male.
While inside the nest, the female moults her flight feathers and incubates the eggs. The regrowth of the feathers in the female coincides with the maturity of the chicks at which point the nest is broken open.
An ode to the GREY HORNBILL in appreciation of their team work.

THE GREY HORNBILL
The Grey Hornbill has an interesting tale
on how they rare
and the birthing responsibilities
that each of them share.
Together they search
for a hole in the tree
where she will rest her self
and her mate will guard-eth her safety.
He will seal-eth the hole
her nest hole in the tree
Thus ensuring
her highness' top security.
With mud pellets he seal-eth the hole
designed with a 'V' shaped slit
Just enough to fit his beak
to feed the lady who will bear his kids.
His lady moults her flight feathers
and lines them to incubate the eggs
while out in the wild he continues his hunt
to feed her fruits and insects.
For 3 weeks he will continuously work
guarding and gathering food
till his lady has regrown her feathers
and the chicks have grown their's too.
Finally the day will dawn
when she will crack open the sealed door,
the chicks will come out in the open
And the circle of life....will continue once more.
