A Prayer.... from the Mantis

With folded hands I Pray...

Give me the strength...
to fight the odds each day

Increase my sharpness...
to escape being easy prey

Enhance my instinctive sense...
to stay far from pesticidal spray

Give man good sense...
to live and let live, where ever he may stay.

    Scientific nameMantodea

The praying mantis is named for its prominent front legs, which are bent and held together at an angle that suggests the position of prayer.

A praying mantis is similar to that of many insects. It has six legs, two wings and two antennae. However, they have some special features which makes them unique among insects. First they are able to turn their head around like humans can. All other insects cannot turn their heads, their neck is too rigid to allow it. Furthermore praying mantids have modified front legs; these front legs are especially designed to catch prey and hold them tightly.
